Americana Corner funds interpretation at Museum

ST. CHARLES, MO – A grant program to bring the story of American history to life will help fund interpreters and tours at the Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum in St. Charles, Mo.

“There are many of our 25,000 annual visitors who would like to see our replica boats up close; this grant will help us offer that experience,” said Bob Foster, executive director.  “We are grateful to Americana Corner and their Preserving America Grants for allowing us to expand our offerings.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum is located on the banks of the Missouri River near where Lewis & Clark stayed in May 1804 on the eve of their historic expedition.

While in St. Charles, the captains added the final two U.S. Army privates to the corps.  Pierre Cruzatte and Francois Labiche had Omaha mothers and French Canadian fathers, making them valuable as interpreters as well as skilled rivermen.  During their stay, the party also socialized, went to church and made final preparations for the three-year journey to document the territory west of the Mississippi.

Among the displays and presentations at the Museum, the Boat House is home of the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, which re-enacted the full Lewis & Clark expedition in 2004-2006, the bicentennial of the expedition.  Three full-size, fully operational replicas of the boats used in the re-enactment are housed on the museum’s lower level.  The 55-foot keelboat, made of Western Cedar, is especially popular in parades and festivals.

In addition to the $7,000 grant from Americana Corner, the Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum is beginning construction of a classroom/media space overlooking the Missouri River.  The Lotsie & Rick Holton Education Center is anticipated to be complete by the July 1 anniversary. Also anticipated are further installments of a film series produced by the organization highlighting key moments in the expedition.
